NPEA’s eighth annual conference was held on April 27-29, 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland. Featuring more than 30 workshops, three keynotes, two receptions, and ample time for networking, this event always provides a valuable opportunity for those in the field of education to come together and share best practices for supporting underrepresented students on the path to and through college. Conference participants represented school and non-school based direct service programs, independent, public and charter schools, colleges and universities, education nonprofits, and others committed to educational access and success.

Looking holistically at the needs of underrepresented students and their families, as well as the partnerships and structures in place to ensure they reach their goals, the 2016 NPEA conference addressed the importance of building purposeful community connections to bolster pathways to success in college, career, and beyond. We shared innovative strategies, common challenges, and best practices to support students and families, encouraging thoughtful dialogue around academic preparation, supporting social-emotional skill development, leadership, summer learning, critical transitions, financial aid, career readiness, college persistence, and other important topics impacting underrepresented students and their communities. As education access professionals and thought leaders in the field, our work is interconnected; we must come together across organizational, institutional, and community settings to help students and their families achieve positive outcomes.

What our members are saying about the conference:

“The consensus is the NPEA conference is now the gold standard…I think the focused mission of NPEA, combined with the myriad issues and the creative/progressive membership make the right recipe for a great conference.”
– Colin Lord, Director of Admissions, Latin School of Chicago

“Attending NPEA 2014 was an incredible gift. It was one of the best-run conferences I’ve ever had the joy of experiencing, and I picked up a larger number of best practices and networking contacts while I was there. I’ve brought a lot back to my workplace, and we’re already beginning to see some positive change.”
– 2014 conference attendee
